Back to the Future…and your future

This year marks the 30th anniversary of one of my favorite movies, Back to the Future.

Today, October 21, 2015, was also the date they went to in the future from 1985 in the sequel.

I don’t know about you, but I could not have clearly imagined what the future would look or feel like 30 years from 1985. I was pretty sure there would be no flying cars or Mr. Fusion based on my knowledge of physics. And I wasn’t sure where I would be because that was before I learned to set goals and create action plans to turn them into reality.

As part of any engagement, I have people set a goal because I want to make sure that my work achieves the results that people come to me for. I’m sort of like an Uber driver – you tell me the specific address you want to go to, and I’ll help you get there.

One of the common questions I like to ask people is where do you want to be in a year, five years, and even ten years. For some people, it can be the start of a profound exercise to map out a plan for their life.

So I will ask you the same questions now:

Where do you want to be in 1 year?

Who do you want to surround yourself with?

What kind of work or hobbies do you want to be doing?

What do you want your relationships to be like?

How much money do you want to make?

How do you want to move thorugh the world? With stress and anxiety, or with passion, power, and peace?

What about 5 years from now?

What about 10 years from now?

Answer the same questions for those timeframes.
The time to plan your future is now. Most people overestimate what they can do in a day, week or month. But most people also underestimate what they can achieve in a year or ten.
