The reason that most people don’t experience long-term weight loss is because of this kind of All-or-Nothing (AoN) thinking. It requires a lot of willpower to keep it up, and eventually you will crash out of it before you can reach your weight loss goal. So you go back to your old habits – only to try again weeks, months, or even years later. This pattern of extreme measures is what causes yo-yo dieting – and it never leads to long-term weight loss.

Why Diets Don’t Work

I’ve been following dieting and weight loss trends for over 20 years. Back in 1998 when I started researching weight loss, the big trend was The Atkins Diet. Over the years I have seen a lot of fad diets come and go – all without success for most people. I see the same thing today with the Keto Diet that’s currently the rage. For most people, if they lose some weight while on a diet – they gain it right back.

The same issue is true for exercise trends – whether it is boot camps or trying to spend two hours in the gym every day. Most people approach an exercise program from an extreme All-or-Nothing attitude that is unsustainable.

The reason diets and boot camps don’t work for most people is that they are All-or-Nothing approaches, and are doomed to fail. That is why 95% of all diets fail in a year. Longer-term the statistics are just as grim. Studies show that 96% of people will gain back all the weight they lost within five years.

And the other issue is that weight loss is not about behaviors for most people. Most people know what they should eat, what they should not eat, and that they should exercise. But it is not a matter of knowledge. It is about unconscious patterns related to food, exercise, and often self-worth.
