As a hypnotherapist, I have a broad arsenal of tools at my disposal to help my clients move towards personal change. It would be foolish on my part to think that every tool will work for every person; all of our situations and needs are different, therefore requiring different types of therapy. Through one-on-one sessions, we can tackle your biggest problem as partners to figure out a suitable solution.
In my last post, I guided you through the process of hypnosis. In my next four posts, I will brief you on a few other tools that have come in handy in my practice. Today we’re focusing on Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP).
What is Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP)?
Neuro Linguistic Programming focuses on your nervous system, your brain, and your five senses to detect what is causing the problem and what will create a solution.
Everything you’ve ever experienced comes in through your five senses, right? So the kind of results you get are a result of your actions, which are in turn a result of the higher processing in your mind. Our minds consist of different programs—or a set of sequences of thoughts, whether through images, sensations, or sounds—that cause us to react to certain things in certain ways.
For example, someone with arachnophobia might think of spiders as giant threats that are hell bent on biting them or causing them harm. This is a set of sequences in their mind that causes negativity and fear around spiders. In contrast, somebody who doesn’t have a phobia of spiders might see in their mind’s eye something smaller and further away, creating a calmer or neutral feeling around it.
Will NLP Therapy Work for Me?
When using NLP, we ask one simple question: What are your mind and emotions doing to create the problem and how can we change it to solve the problem? As we discover this together, I’ll guide you through each step to take you from one to the other.
A lot of our mental programming comes from childhood, and just like a computer needs periodic software updates, your mind undergoes much-needed “updates” from Neuro Linguistic Programming to get you your result.
